SUMMARY:
Software/Services Company Executive

Joe Burke has intentionally charted a 22-year career in different roles and through various types of firm that make, distribute, retail, consult on or write about computer software and related services, and has done so internationally in both emerging and mature/declining markets, in large companies and in startups. Burke began his career as a software designer and developer, and thereafter charted a course managing different functional departments including R&D, Marketing, Sales, Consulting, Publishing and more.
For the past several years Burke has used this wealth of experience to chart specific market opportunities and create business plans for new software products and services on behalf of startup firms or companies that seek to restructure/restart. Burke typically assumes a leadership role within the company for a limited period of time directing a key operation and helping the firm reposition within the competitive marketspace.
Burke has successfully co- negotiated and managed two divestitures and one acquisition. He is comfortable with all of the minute details involved in assembling complex licensing agreements for critical technology and related projects, services and extended support with end-user customers, strategic partners and resellers. He has created and structured sales groups for multiple types of channel distribution including direct, telesales, resellers, distributors, catalog and internet.

- Sales, Marketing, & Operations Executive with twenty-two years experience in worldwide markets with European residence.
- Sales management
via multiple channels (Direct, Channel, OEM, Telesales, Internet [retail and ASP-delivered solutions], Catalog/Direct Mail), and hands-on selling experience of big-ticket product and services at the executive level.
- Marketing management experience includes branding, competitive positioning, design of collateral materials, web site, packaging, creation of PR and articles; managed multi-million dollar marketing budgets on an international basis.
- Hands-on knowledge and authorship of many software product/offer configurations and terms of pricing, packaging, legal licensing issues and agreements, and relevant sales commission plans.

Business Management:
- Founder and CEO of successful technical publishing firm, profitably divested.
- Startup: Authored several funded business plans with complete financial models/projections.
- M&A: co-managed two successful corporate divestitures, one acquisition, and one turnaround.

Technical Experience:
- Software Products experience: HTML/XML/Java/Active-X ASP software, Networking, Databases, Office Automation, several Programming Languages.
- Direct experience in Vertical Markets: Gen'l. Manufacturing, Distribution, Education, Publishing, Shipping/Motor Freight, Banking,
Facilities Management and Commercial Architecture.
- Began career as designer/developer of software, rose to management position in consulting services firm that did individual software projects.

- Direct experience in all phases of software product life cycle: design, development, extension, retirement, replacement.
- Broad background includes operations, international sales & marketing (overseas residence - Germany), R&D, IT consulting, publishing.
- Early technical career (developer in several programming languages and database systems) provides for fast learning cycle on new products and technologies.
- Public Speaker and author of 20 years on a number of software industry topics including: software market evolution, consulting service business models, mathematical programming algorithms, software coding structures for efficient performance, database design and testing, career development in the software industry, pricing and packaging for software, negotiating consulting project areements, and competitive strategy for software and service firms. Burke continues to author articles for different IT publications.

For the record, of the last eight companies that Burke has worked with as an executive/manager, four were winners (where Investors, Burke and other shareholders cashed out for gain), two were losers (see chronology for more detail) and two are still in operation and making progress (and Burke still holds equity).

A life-long blitz chess player, Burke thrives in challenging, extreme situations where time, resources and/or information are limited.
